have the police directed you here?
Police have a duty to contact the victims of youth crime. They work in partnership with other professionals to address the offending behaviour of children, in order that they cause no further harm and go on to achieve their potential as positive members of society.
Restorative Justice (RJ) is a process which supports the victim of a crime and the person responsible to communicate, repair harm, and find a positive way forward. It brings those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm. This can be by making the person responsible aware of the harm they caused which helps them to make reparations and plan for restoration in the community.
Restorative Justice can be facilitated in numerous ways:
Conferencing – face to face Meeting which will be risk assessed and facilitated by staff from Ealing YJS
Shuttle Mediation – a worker ‘Shuttling’ between the victim and offender by passing messages, or it might be done with audio recordings
Letter of Explanation – a letter written by the young person who caused harm so that they can reflect on their behaviour and identify what harm has been caused. The young person may provide an apology or explanation as to what happened and what they would like to do to repair the harm caused.
Reparation – requested by the person harmed for the supervised young person to undertake some work in the community for a charity or cause that the victim has chosen
Other – such as the person completing a Poster, Recording, Poem or undertaking victim impact discussions
The victims support practitioner will follow up with a telephone call at a time convenient for you and provide you with updates on the case, obtain your views about the offence and discuss your options. Alternatively you can e-mail us at youthjusticeservice@ealing.gov.uk . Again please quote your CRIS/Crime number.
Please be assured there is no obligation on you and no pressure. We are happy to speak with you even if you wish not to participate in RJ.
